ABOUT THIS COURSE
International investment law is a branch of public international law which governs foreign direct investment and the resolution of disputes between foreign investors and sovereign states. The recent development of international investment protection law is remarkable and international investment law is emerging as a distinct and important field of international law. Countries have collectively signed more than 2300 bilateral investment treaties and more than 300 treaties with provisions relating to protection and promotion of investments.
The number of investment-related disputes between investors and states has also increased over time. The Practice of International Investment Law and Arbitration is becoming the main stream for big law firms. This area needs lawyers who have knowledge of the subject. In a recent high-profile investor-state arbitration between investors on an oil company in Russia and the Russian Federation, the tribunal awarded a compensation of 50 Billion US Dollars. The Law Firm charged a whopping 90 Million US Dollars as fees for representing them in this arbitration.
This course aims to introduce the students to the public international law standards for the treatment of foreign investments and the resolution of investment-related disputes. This course also intends at introducing the students to the core principles of international investment law and investment dispute settlement system. Students will gain a thorough understanding of the theory and practice of international investment law and dispute settlement principles and practice.
