The Madras High Court on Thursday restrained Speaker of Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly from holding a floor test till Wednesday since Advocate General Vijay Narayan sought time till then to obtain instructions from the Governor on DMK’s plea to hold the test at the earliest.
Justice M. Duraiswamy passed the interim order after Senior Counsel Kapil Sibal, representing M.K. Stalin, apprehended that in the meantime the “minority Government could be converted into a majority” by disqualifying 19 dissident AIADMK MLAs and holding the trust vote immediately.
Though the judge wanted to know whether the AG would be able give an undertaking that the trust vote would not be held till Wednesday, Mr. Narayan replied in the negative. “In such a case, I shall pass an order restraining the respondents,” the judge said before dictating his order.
He made it clear that the trust vote should not be held until the court passes further orders on Mr. Stalin’s petition on Wednesday.
