MUMBAI: The Bombay high court has asked the Union government to take a decision within six weeks on the application for Indian citizenship of 52-year-old Asif Karadia who was born in Pakistan but has been residing in Mumbai for over 49 years.
The bench restrained the authorities from deporting or taking any coercive steps against Karadia, whose parents are of Indian origin. Karadia’s mother had shifted to Pakistan, but returned to India when Asif was three years old. His plea for citizenship has been rejected several times the on grounds that he is a Pakistani national.
