Barcan+Kirby LLP was formed in April 2015, following the merger of two Bristol-based firms – Barcan Woodward and Kirby Sheppard, both of which were established for more than 20 years. The firm now employs in excess of 150 people and has strengthened and broadened its depth of services.

The firm: Barcan+Kirby has six offices across Bristol and South Gloucestershire, therefore a lot of its client work comes from people in the vicinity. This is particularly true for services such as conveyancing, wills/probate and family law. Most of the firm’s clients are based in Bristol and the surrounding area, with the exception of the medical negligence and personal injury teams who act for clients based throughout the UK.

The firm was named Bristol Law Society’s ‘Law Firm of the Year (up to 15 Partners)’ in October 2015. It recently launched a new department – Court of Protection – and made an internal promotion to partner (Sasha Jacques).

Types of work undertaken: The firm has one of the largest family law teams in Bristol, with expertise in private finance and public law care work.

The medical negligence team is particularly well known and respected for its extensive experience in a range of injury types, including cerebral palsy and maximum severity birth injuries, head and brain injuries, amputations and fatal injuries. Of the eight clinical negligence solicitors in the team, six are members of either the Law Society Clinical Negligence Panel or AvMA Panel.

In addition, the personal injury team has particular experience in dealing with catastrophic injury cases, including claims arising from brain, back and spinal injuries.

Other offices: Bedminster, Clifton, Horfield, Kingswood, Thornbury
