Based in Bromley and with an office in the City of London for the commercial team, Batchelors provides diverse services for businesses, organisations and individuals. The firm: The practice can trace its history back to formation in 1648 and adopted the name Batchelors in 1986. It has since expanded by both merger and organic growth, with the firm adding further fee earning capability in both its property and housing management teams in recent years.

The firm has established an enviable reputation within the social housing sector with its cross disciplinary team, able to offer a ‘one-stop-shop’ for its social housing clients. With some 20 fee-earners acting across a diverse range of services, from development and acquisitions, employment, commercial disputes, procurement and conveyancing as well as housing management.

The housing management team comprises nine lawyers. It is able to provide a depth of expertise unrivalled by any other regional firm, and the team prides itself on the quality of service provided to clients via qualified solicitors.

In an effort to relieve some of the current financial pressures faced by clients, Batchelors has put together a number of fixed-fee packages, including services for debt collection, housinag management and conveyancing.

Types of work undertaken: The full range of corporate commaercial services is provided, including acquisition and disposals, negotiation and preparation of construction contracts, partnership issues, intellectual property rights and e-commerce, and terms and conditions of trading. The firm also offers services to banks and financial institutions from legal charges to specialist litigation.

Litigation expertise includes employment, professional negligence, claims of fraud, Company Act matters such as restoring companies to the register and company directors’ disqualification proceedings, landlord and tenant issues, protection of intellectual property rights, and building and construction disputes. The firm’s expertise extends into the High Court, the County Court, specialist tribunals and other forums for dispute resolution.

Commercial property expertise includes all aspects of commercial leases, on-licences and off-licences, and purchase of both freehold and leasehold properties and commercial mortgages to individuals, companies and social landlords. Site acquisition and plot disposals for developers and registered social landlords are also handled.

Housing Association matters include secured funding, transfers of engagements, management agreements, development and construction transactions and constitutional arrangements. The firm’s dedicated housing management department has acted for Registered Providers for over 25 years in areas such as rent arrears, possession cases, licensees and squatters, harassment and nuisance, neighbour disputes, injunctions, leasehold disputes and shared ownership. The firm undertakes housing litigation in all courts to include the Court of Appeal where it has enjoyed some notable success.

The private client side of Batchelors’ work is equally accomplished. The wills, trust and probate team has benefited from investment in staff training and has qualified members of STEP. High-net-worth individuals make up a large proportion of the client base, and family business succession is a focus for the firm. The department also has particular expertise in respect of inheritance claims under the 1975 Act and also contested wills, and has a dedicated website (www.disputeawill.co.uk) which continues to attract instructions.

Each department is partner-led, with a focus on prompt, quality customer service combined with value for money. Civil agency work is also undertaken.

Forward thinking and the embracing of online opportunities has led to the firm developing several niche microsites focusing on specific sectors, with more to be launched shortly.
