Internship Experiences @ National Human Rights Commission (NHRC); Rated 8/10, Stipend Rs. 5000

Name of the intern: Nikhil Joshi, Dr. D Y Patil College of Law, 4th year

How did you apply: I applied for the internships from National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) website. They offer two internships; a summer internship which begins from 18th May to 6th June each year and a winter internship in the month of September.

The selection of the interns in purely on merit basis.

Timings/Duration: 4 weeks, 6 days a week, 9 am to 5 pm

First impression: First Impression about National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) was great, as it gave me an chance to interact with members of commission and students from all over India ( Note: The internship is not limited only to law students)

Accommodation: Accommodation was managed searching online for paying guest (PG) at south ex, the rent for one month was 7 thousand INR, which included meals, and 2 as security deposit.

Main tasks: I was given a chance to understand the issue of Human Rights, Refugee Laws, etc.. No particular work was assigned to any intern, but the internship program was purely to make interns aware of Human Rights and issues related to it.

The internship program at NHRC included two field visits. One to NGO and other to Ghaziabad district jail and a project was assigned to the interns.

Work environment: The work environment at NHRC was average and the people at the place of internship were good, particularly members of the commission.. The main advantage was not only law students were welcome for the internships but students from political science, geography, criminology etc were welcomed.

Best things: The best thing about the internship were the session that were arranged from various field related to Human Rights, Refugee Law, Rights of Person with Disabilities, Manual Scavenging, Bonded Labor, Child Labor etc

Bad things: The interns at NHRC were only given project to complete with, and were not exposed to practical working of the commission like how a complain is made to commission, what are the steps taken by the commission in a complain, how a complain is disposed off.

Food options and places worth visiting nearby: Accommodation was average as strict rules were issued on the very first day. Food option was included as per our request ( Veg or Non Veg) or one can always go for street food in New Delhi. Places which are worth visiting are Supreme Court, Supreme Court Museum, Parliament Museum, Delhi Hatt, University Of Delhi etc

Stipend: Rs. 5000

Rating: 8/10
